Lydian

Lydian is the 4th mode of the major scale (step pattern W – W – W – H – W – W – H; from F: F – G – A – B – C – D – E). Major with a raised 4th (#4) — dreamy, ethereal, and floating. Often called the brightest mode, with an otherworldly suspended quality.

Like major (Ionian) with one alteration: #4. That single semitone removes the subdominant pull and creates a sense of levitation rather than resolution.

Where you hear it: Film scores, progressive rock, jazz — Joe Satriani's "Flying in a Blue Dream", John Williams, Steve Vai.
